So Cheney shot someone. I can't help but think that this is a media ploy to distract us from other really intense things that are currently being ignored by the media. I watch 24. I know how these things work.
South Dakota. While I know that SD isn't a hotbed of liberal politics, I had no idea how extremely conservative they were - and how far they would go to flex their right-winged might. In case you didn't hear, South Dakota last week passed a bill in the House which would all but ban abortions. From the New Standard:
Citing controversial conclusions by the South Dakota Task Force to Study Abortion, the bill states that scientific studies and scientific advances show that life begins at conception, and “each human being is totally unique immediately at fertilization.”
The bill further says that in order “to fully protect the rights, interests, and health of the pregnant mother, the rights, interest, and life of her unborn child, and the mother's fundamental natural intrinsic right to a relationship with her child, abortions in South Dakota should be prohibited.”
In case you're under the illusion that South Dakota is just a bumfuck state up north that means nothing, think again. If this gets passed in the state senate, the issue will be forced to the federal courts. The Supreme Court. The keepers of Roe v. Wade, which ostensibly keeps federal government in control of reproductive rights. If Roe v. Wade gets overturned, which is *very* possible, the states would then have their own abortion laws kick in. Over 30 states have laws on the books right now strictly mandating abortion - remember, R v. W happened in the 70's, and most laws were never changed since the federal government trumped the state. So, all those archaic laws that were passed in the 40's, 50's, 60's and early 70's would all immediately go into effect. They are passing a bill that states that "each human being is totally unique immediately at fertilization.", ending the arguement about when life begins, and setting precident.
So, while Cheney shot a fellow dipshit hunting wingless, flightless, hand raised birds, a woman's right to choose has just been taken away.
